Infection Control

Infection Control

Dental practices have a legal responsibility to ensure the risk of spreading infectious diseases is prevented or minimised. The Dental Board of Australia sets a number of industry guidelines, in particular the Guidelines on Infection Control. Every practice must have an infection control manual that sets out the procedures used in the practice, adhering to:

  • ADA Guidelines for Infection Control (current edition)

  • NHMRC Australian Guidelines for Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare

  • AS/NZS 4815:2006 Office-based health care facilities – Reprocessing of reusable medical and surgical instruments and equipment, and maintenance of the associated environment

  • Dental practitioners work under the AS/NZS 4815 unless they work within an organisation that operate under AS/NZS 4187:2004 Cleaning, disinfecting and sterilising reusable medical and surgical instruments and equipment, and maintenance of associated environments in health care facilities.

Responsibility for infection prevention and control belongs to all practice members. While many activities such as cleaning, sterilising and storing instruments are often delegated to junior staff, accountability still rests with the clinician.

Amalgamate aims to raise infection control awareness for all practice members, while ensuring understanding of their individual and collective responsibilities.

Infection Control Auditing

Through visiting your practice, Amalgamate can perform a comprehensive audit and assessment of your infection control practices and documentation. A detailed report and plan of action is then created to address any lapses or weaknesses. Amalgamate can also assist with the implementation of any changes to your infection control strategy and any protocols or documentation supporting it.

Customised Infection Control Manuals

Do you require an up-to-date and easy to use practice infection control manual?

Amalgamate is able to provide a customised manual tailored to your dental practice.

In order to tailor the manual, Amalgamate will liaise with you via phone and email to confirm details of current procedures, equipment and products. The manual will be provided in draft format for you input, review and approval. Once feedback is received, the manual is reviewed, edited and proofread then returned via email as the final version.

The infection control manual is provided in Microsoft Word and becomes your property to change and amend as required moving forward.

Infection Control Management Plans

Do you require a simple, easy to understand infection control management plan?

Dental practices located in Queensland are required by Public Health Act 2005 (Queensland) to have an Infection Control Management Plan (ICMP). An ICMP is a documented plan to prevent or minimise the risk of infection.

Amalgamate is able to provide a simple and compliant ICMP for your dental practice.

The ICMP is provided in Microsoft Word and becomes your property to change and amend as required moving forward.
